Attack on the Piarist Mission in Minheuene (Mozambique)

On April 30, the Piarist mission in Minheuene, Mozambique, suffered a serious attack amid the conflict that has plagued the region for years. The news could not have been more devastating: the Piarist mission in Minheuene has been practically destroyed and burned to the ground, including the parish church, the escolinha, and the community house.

The village has also been vandalized, and several of its facilities destroyed: the health center, the recently renovated elementary school, and various family homes… Most of the population managed to escape, hiding in the surrounding forests, and the religious community that lived there has lost their homes and sense of security. We are still awaiting a full assessment and reflection, as well as short-, medium-, and long-term plans.

We express our immense sadness, anger at the injustice suffered, and deep concern for the present and future of the area, for the people of Minheuene and the surrounding towns who have suffered so much due to poverty, war, and violence.
