Itaka-Escolapios and the ethical need to abandon the social network X

In today's digital landscape, social organizations face the challenge of choosing platforms that reflect our values and promote constructive discourse. Itaka-Escolapios, committed to education and social justice, must reevaluate its presence on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter) due to ethical concerns related to the proliferation of hate speech and misinformation on the platform.

Research has indicated that accounts linked to extremist movements have increased their activity on X, displaying messages inciting racial, religious and gender hatred, without significant consequences. This inaction on the part of the platform contributes to the normalization of harmful speech. In the face of the current problem on X, it is necessary for civil society organizations to consider alternatives that promote a safer environment aligned with their values. Platforms such as Mastodon and Bluesky offer decentralized networks that allow greater control over content. These alternatives prioritize effective moderation and protection against hate speech, providing more adequate spaces for the work of social organizations.

For all these reasons, and similar to many other social organizations, Itaka- Escolapios has decided to close its account on this platform. As an organization committed to education, social justice and building a more equitable world, we believe that remaining on X would contravene our values. We will continue to constantly evaluate our presence in social networks, aware that none of them is perfect, opting for safer, more responsible social networks aligned with our mission, fostering digital spaces that promote respect and constructive dialogue.
